7 lessons for leaders from Emmys. Preparation. Communication. Teamwork. Feedback. Adaptability. Learning. Authenticity..

👋 Quick question for you: Did you pick any of the recent Emmy award winners? As you know I like connecting the dots between professional theatre and the 'theatre’ of leadership. So I’m curious - who in your business, deserves a prestigious Emmy for their stellar performance last year?

I believe there are some strong similarities between impactful leadership and the award-winning performances of leading actors. There are some lessons leaders can learn. Here are a few that cross my mind.

Lesson 1: The Power of Preparation Just like actors meticulously prepare for their roles, business leaders need to embrace the discipline of being well prepared. Imagine your next big presentation as your blockbuster movie premiere. Rehearse, study your lines (or data),be authentic, bring all your skills to the moment, don't play safe, do your best prep and watch your confidence and your audience belief unfold!

Lesson 2: Show Adaptability, or You Won’t Get the Gig! Remember how actors seem to seamlessly shift from one role to another? Business leaders, take note! In our fast-paced corporate world, the ability to adapt is like a superpower. Be flexible, and strive to stay nimble to thrive in the ever-changing business landscape.

Lesson 3: Lights, Camera, Communication! 🎤 Compelling communication lies at the heart of both a great stage or screen performance. The same goes for successful leadership. Just as with a great TV series or film, your team needs a compelling storyline. This is important for your team to convince clients your offering has merit. Craft your messages with passion, clarity, and a dash of charisma to make people care and to get your story across. Always prepare for a standing ovation!

Lesson 4: Embrace Critique and Keep Smiling Just as actors face critics, business leaders encounter feedback. It's not about the criticism itself; it's about how you handle it. Embrace the reviews, learn, and come back stronger. Remember, even Oscar winners faced rejection on their way to the top.

Lesson 5: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work In the world of acting, collaboration is the name of the game. Actors continuously explore possibilities with their fellow cast members to bring out each others best performance. Business leaders, take a cue! A harmonious, inventive, and flexible team produces the most exceptional performances.

Lesson 6: Never Stop Learning Leading actors constantly refine and refresh their craft. In the business realm, staying ahead means adopting a mindset of continuous learning. Trends change, industries evolve, left-field events always occur – be the leader who's always ready for the sequel!

Lesson 7: Be Authentic, Be YOU Lastly, authenticity – lies at the heart of memorable performances and outstanding leadership. Just as actors bring their unique flair to a role, be genuine in your leadership style. Dare to be distinctive. Authenticity builds trust and fosters a culture of openness.

So to wrap up, are there performances some of your team members have put in that deserve special recognition?  Have these 7 lessons served as a timely reminder to you?

Remember the business stage is yours to excel on – it's time this year to shine! Step up. Step out.  Step into leadership success in 2024 🌟
